Harbor Beach 64, Ubly 50

Pirates Use Big Third Quarter to Pull Away, Clinch Share of BTC-Black

Friday, February 06 — Ubly, MI — Big Thumb - Black

It felt like the old days: a gymnasium filled to the rafters, a classic rivalry, near-zero visibility outside and the most intense basketball action inside. Harbor Beach defeated Ubly, 64-50 on Friday, February 06 to clinch at least a share of the Big Thumb Conference’s Black Division in a back-and-forth ball game that featured nine lead changes and five ties.

The Pirates led at the end of the first quarter by just two points, but it was Ubly’s tandem of Devin Geiger and Collin Franzel who combined for 15 points in the second quarter to give the Bearcats the lead at halftime, 32-31. The second half began the same way with five quick points from Wyatt Schumacher and Franzel to put the Bearcats up 37-31, their largest lead of the night, less than a minute into the third quarter. Beginning with a Matt Geiger basket in the post, Harbor Beach subsequently erased the deficit and led by eight just four and a half minutes later with a 14-0 run. A Franzel basket for Ubly was the only thing that stopped the streak, but Harbor Beach finished the third quarter on another 7-0 run in the final two minutes, leading 52-39. The final eight minutes were a balanced effort between the rivals with Harbor Beach holding serve mostly from the free throw line.

Harbor Beach was paced by Skiler Kruse’s 21 points and Benson Harper’s 16. Matt Geiger chipped in 14, as well. Franzel led the Bearcats with 19 points, followed by Devin Geiger’s 14 and Logan Johnson finishing with 11 points.

The Pirates have a three-game lead in the Big Thumb-Black standings with three divisional games remaining (one versus Memphis and two against Capac). One more victory will clinch their third-straight and outright division championship.
